From Africa’s oldest independent Republic,  I ‘m like an acquitted defendant in a kangaroo court, I’m privileged not only to serve as speaker for this landmark occasion, but to do so with the desire to address a long standing problem of my country on the topic “The Reality Of  Liberia’s Education System”.
As I reminisce, more than a decade ago when I was growing up as a child, my mother told me. “ Eugenia, in spite of Liberia’s falling educational system and the prevailing economic challenges that confront us as a nation, Liberia will be proud of people like you who will rise up to the occasion to proffer ways as solutions in its problem”.
Although we stand at the leading edge of an era of amazing developments with the resilience to stay adoptable and responsive to complex new situations, it’s sad to know that the rate at which our world is changing  profoundly does not cut across all regions.
It’s a fact that many countries around the world including Liberia have a strikingly high percentage of illiterate people. What is there to brag about my dear audience when a significant number of Liberia’s population lacks quality education? Do you know that countless number of children in Liberia do not go to school at all simply because they do not have the energy to do so? Or, have you forgotten that Africa in reality is a disease-ridden continent, which means that many children do not go to school due to illnesses?
As it is a glaring fact that 26 percent of all illiterate adults live in sub Saharan Africa despite progress, gender disparity in youth literacy remains persistent in almost one in five countries. Liberia is no exception to such problem.
The education system in Liberia was severely affected due to the first and second Liberian civil wars, between 1989 to 2003. Liberia education system is hampered by inadequate schools and insufficient supplies of school materials, as well as the lack of qualified teachers. Corruption on the other hand is a serious problem that is yet to be handled and taken away from schools due to government failure to provide subsidies, with the low rate of salaries and other incentives for teachers.
Haven said all that, one would understand that life isn’t what you’re given but what you create, what you conquer and what you aim to achieve by attaining the requisite education. Liberia has remarkably tried in recent years to ensure quality education for all but has since been struggling. In recent years, the country has had an increasing interest in the development of Liberia’s Educational system for which they established a free primary educational scheme In line with the expansion of Education for all (EFA) program across the country. Government has also announced free tuition for all government colleges and Universities nationwide amongst others.
As it is said that education is a key to a nation’s development, join me and let’s fight for a continuous change in our educational sector and make education for all a reality in my country.
Interestingly, the world can only be a better place if it is a happy place for all. Developing nation like Liberia in particular, must push hard in order to bring her people similar educational amenities that other developed nations enjoy.

The major problem affecting national education system is due to the first and second Liberian civil wars, between 1989 to 2003 and has since been hampered by inadequate schools and insufficient supplies of school materials, as well as the lack of qualified teachers. Corruption is one key problem to the educational sector as well. Government failure to provide subsidies, with the low rate of salaries and other incentives for teachers is another problem. The inability to properly decentralize the educational system, amongst others.
